The real problem
Why Kitchener Driveways Fail Early and How We Build Them to Last
Most Kitchener driveways fail early because of what is under the asphalt, not the asphalt itself. Much of the city sits on clay and silt till that holds water, and every freeze-thaw cycle lifts a thin base and cracks the surface above it.
Water expands about 9% when it freezes. Once it gets into a crack in a driveway with 75 mm of stone underneath, spring traffic breaks the weakened edges into potholes.
Our standard build answers each cause: 150 to 200 mm of compacted Granular A, geotextile fabric over soft clay, 60 mm of compacted HL3 hot mix and at least a 2% slope away from the house. The full build specs are on our asphalt driveway paving page.
