Asphalt Paving in New Hamburg, Baden and Wilmot Township

Kitchener Asphalt Paving Pros has paved driveways, lanes and small commercial lots in New Hamburg, Baden and the rest of Wilmot Township since 2013. It is a straight run west from our Kitchener shop on Highway 7/8.

Wilmot has two growing towns and a rural south. New subdivisions in Baden and New Hamburg bring first-time driveways, older homes along the Nith River bring drainage questions, and the farm and country lots toward New Dundee bring long lanes.

Paving in New Hamburg is shaped by the river more than anything else. Parts of the town sit in a regulated floodplain, so before we change a grade near the Nith we check it against the Grand River Conservation Authority's mapping.

Services

Paving Services Across Wilmot Township

Most Wilmot bookings fall into four groups, and each one leans on a different service. Here is how they map to the work we do.

First driveways in new subdivisions

Builder gravel in Baden and New Hamburg is graded, topped up and finished with our asphalt driveway paving build of 60 mm compacted HL3 on Granular A.

Replacing worn driveways in older streets

Older New Hamburg homes near the downtown are often on their second or third surface. Our driveway removal and replacement sends the old asphalt to recycling and rebuilds the slope.

Repairs after a hard winter

Our asphalt repair services cover patching, crack sealing and infrared repair, chosen after we find the cause of the damage.

Lanes, lots and runoff control

We pave private roads and rural laneways south of the towns, and install extruded asphalt curbs on small lots to steer runoff toward a catch basin rather than a neighbour.

Communities

New Hamburg, Baden, Petersburg, St. Agatha and New Dundee

Wilmot is 20 to 25 minutes from our shop along Highway 7/8, well inside our standard service area. Petersburg and Baden are the shorter runs, and New Dundee in the south is the longest.

New Hamburg

The township's larger town, on the Nith River. Downtown streets near the river carry floodplain rules, and Huron Street and Peel Street are Regional roads.

Baden

Home to the Township offices on Snyder's Road West and to Castle Kilbride. Newer subdivisions on the edges of town make up much of our driveway work.

Petersburg and Mannheim

Country lots and acreages between Kitchener and Baden, close to the Highway 7/8 corridor. Mannheim sits on Regional roads at the Kitchener boundary.

St. Agatha

A small village in the township's north on Notre Dame Drive and Erb's Road, both Regional roads.

New Dundee

The southern village, surrounded by farms and estate lots with long lanes, reached by New Dundee Road.

Floodplain

Paving Near the Nith River Floodplain in New Hamburg

Much of downtown New Hamburg lies in the Nith River floodplain, and work that regrades land or moves fill there may need a Grand River Conservation Authority permit first. The GRCA lists major floods in 1948, 1954, 1975 and 2008, and more recently in February 2018 and January 2020.

After its New Hamburg Flood Mitigation Study, the GRCA updated its regulated area mapping for the town in June 2021. Permits now fall under Ontario Regulation 41/24.

  • Check first: enter your address in the GRCA's Map Your Property tool to see if it falls inside the regulation limit
  • Same footprint, same grade: replacing a driveway at its existing height is the simplest job near the river
  • Raising or widening: adding fill or extending the paved area in a regulated area is where a permit usually comes in
  • Drainage: after a flood, the base is soaked, so we probe it and replace soft Granular A before paving

New homes

Driveways in Baden and New Hamburg's Newer Subdivisions

A new-build driveway in Baden or New Hamburg should usually wait one to two years after move-in, until service trenches and the lot grade have settled. Wilmot expects about 11,000 more residents by 2051, most of them inside these two towns, so this is the fastest-growing part of our Wilmot calendar.

Settlement timing

Backfill along the front of new lots keeps compacting for a season or two. Paving after it settles avoids a dip across the driveway at the sidewalk.

Builder-grade base

We probe the builder's gravel at the site visit. Where it is thinner than 150 mm of Granular A, we add stone and compact it before paving.

Widening the ramp

A wider entrance is an alteration that needs a Township of Wilmot entrance permit. The Township's standard ramp is 4.27 m wide for a single and 7.3 m for a double.

Garage slab and sidewalk joints

We saw-cut or mill clean edges where the asphalt meets the garage slab and the sidewalk, then tack coat the joint so it stays sealed.

Rural lanes

Rural Properties Toward New Dundee

South of New Hamburg and Baden, Wilmot opens into farms and estate lots where a driveway can run a few hundred metres. These lanes get a road build, not a driveway build.

Hot mix lanes

50 mm of HL8 under 40 mm of HL3, on 150 mm of Granular A over 300 mm of Granular B. Expect $4.50 to $7.50 per sq ft depending on base work.

Recycled millings

Compacted recycled asphalt for lanes where dust control and cost matter most, at $1.50 to $3.00 per sq ft.

Ditch culverts

New Wilmot entrances sometimes need a culvert to keep the ditch draining. The applicant supplies and installs it, using pipe the Township approves.

Permits

Who Approves Your Entrance in Wilmot

The owner of the road approves the entrance: the Township of Wilmot for township roads, the Region of Waterloo for Regional roads, and the Ministry of Transportation along Highway 7/8. In New Hamburg's regulated areas, the GRCA can be a fourth approval.

Road or areaWho approvesWhat it involves
Township roadsTownship of WilmotEntrance permit (minimum 20 business days), then a Right of Way Permit (minimum 10 business days) with contractor details, WSIB clearance and insurance
Regional roads such as Snyder's Road, Huron Street and Peel StreetRegion of WaterlooRegional access permit for the entrance and a Regional work permit for work in the road

We supply our WSIB clearance and certificate of insurance for the Township's Right of Way Permit. Farm and field entrances on township roads start with a site meeting with the Township's Roads Manager.

FAQ

Wilmot Paving Questions

What New Hamburg, Baden and rural Wilmot owners ask us before booking.

Is my New Hamburg property in a GRCA regulated area?

Type your address into the Map Your Property tool on the Grand River Conservation Authority website and look for the regulation limit layer. If you are inside it, we plan the grade so the job stays at existing height or include the permit in the timeline.

Do you pave driveways in Baden's new subdivisions?

Yes, once the lot has settled. We check the builder's base depth first, add Granular A where it falls short, then pave.

Who issues entrance permits on Wilmot township roads?

The Township of Wilmot issues them for township roads. Regional roads such as Snyder's Road and Huron Street go to the Region of Waterloo instead.

How long does a Wilmot entrance permit take?

Plan on at least 20 business days for the Township entrance permit and another 10 for the Right of Way Permit. We file early so paving day is not held up.
