Fresh asphalt driveway and apron in Doon

Typical projects by town

Asphalt Paving Projects in Kitchener and Waterloo Region

Kitchener Asphalt Paving Pros has completed more than 2,500 asphalt projects since 2013, and most of them follow a handful of patterns set by the age of the houses, the soil and the traffic on each property. This page describes those typical jobs by neighbourhood and town, with the size, install type, base work and time on site you can expect.

Each card describes the kind of job we see again and again in that area, not a single client's property. When you book a site visit, ask for nearby streets where you can see similar work in person.

Driveways

Residential Driveway Projects

Residential driveways come in four install types, and the right one depends on what is under the old surface. Each card shows a typical job with its usual size, install method, base work and time on site, with prices before HST.

Full Driveway Rebuild on a Stanley Park Bungalow

Single-width driveways beside 1960s bungalows in Stanley Park often sit on a thin layer of stone over wet clay, and they show it with alligator cracking and a dip near the garage. These need a full excavation, which is our driveway removal and replacement service at its deepest.

  • Typical size: 400 to 500 sq ft
  • Install: dig out 250 to 350 mm, geotextile, new Granular A, 60 mm HL3
  • Time on site: 1 to 2 days
  • Typical price: $7.00 to $11.00 per sq ft

Driveway Widening With a New Curb Cut in Doon

Owners of 1980s and 1990s homes in Doon often widen a single driveway to fit a second car, which changes the apron and the curb. The City of Kitchener requires a permit for that, applied for at least 15 business days ahead, at $400 with $249 refunded after inspection.

The zoning by-law also limits driveway width relative to the lot, and clearances apply from hydrants, hydro poles, community mailboxes and City trees. We check the City of Kitchener driveway widening rules for each property before quoting.

  • Install: peel and pave the old section, new base under the widened strip
  • Time on site: 1 day once the permit is approved
  • Paperwork: City permit, plus Region of Waterloo permits on Regional roads

Peel and Pave on a Two-Storey in Laurelwood, Waterloo

West Waterloo sits on the sandier Waterloo Moraine, so a double driveway in Laurelwood often has a base that still drains well under worn-out asphalt. Removing the old surface, topping up Granular A and repaving is usually enough, as we see on most driveway paving jobs in Waterloo.

  • Typical size: 800 to 1,000 sq ft
  • Install: removal and replacement over the existing base
  • Time on site: 1 day
  • Typical price: $4,800 to $8,000

Overlay on a Sound Driveway in Hespeler, Cambridge

When a driveway is grey and rough but not sinking, asphalt resurfacing adds 8 to 15 years for less than a replacement. Cambridge sits on sand and gravel outwash that drains well, so many Cambridge driveways in Hespeler are good overlay candidates.

  • Install: clean, mill tie-ins at garage and street, tack coat, 40 to 50 mm HL3
  • Time on site: half a day to 1 day
  • Typical price: $3.00 to $4.50 per sq ft

Finishing a Builder Driveway in Rosenberg

Many new homes in Rosenberg and Lackner Woods come with a builder's base coat only. Once the lot has settled, usually 1 to 2 years after move-in, we correct any dips, tack the surface and add the HL3 top lift, or repave fully if the base coat has broken up.

  • Install: tack coat and HL3 surface lift, or full pave
  • Time on site: half a day to 1 day

Gravel to Asphalt on a Country Lot Near Breslau

Homes on larger lots around Breslau and Conestogo often have a gravel driveway that has been graded for years. If the stone is sound and drains, our asphalt driveway paving crew regrades, tops up and compacts Granular A, then paves.

On very long lanes, a hot mix section near the house with recycled asphalt beyond it keeps the cost down, a common choice for paving in Woolwich Township.

  • Install: grade and pave
  • Typical price: $4.00 to $6.50 per sq ft

Commercial

Commercial Lot, Laneway and Yard Projects

Commercial projects are planned around the people who still need to use the property, so most plaza and condo lots are phased by section over 2 to 5 days. Property managers usually ask us first about phasing, insurance certificates and who controls the road at the entrance.

Plaza Lot Mill and Overlay on a Regional Road

Strip plazas along Regional roads such as Fischer-Hallman Road or Homer Watson Boulevard often need the worn top layer milled off and replaced while the entrance stays open. Work in the Regional road allowance needs a Region of Waterloo road permit, which we confirm before quoting.

Condo Roadway Reconstruction in Waterloo

Townhouse condominiums from the 1980s and 1990s often have private roads that have been patched for years. A full rebuild uses 150 mm Granular A over 300 mm Granular B, with a 50 mm HL8 binder and 40 mm HL3 surface, done in sections so residents keep access to their units.

  • Typical price: $7.00 to $11.00 per sq ft for full reconstruction
  • Paperwork: certificate of insurance naming the condo corporation

Farm Laneway in Wellesley Township

Long farm lanes around St. Clements and Linwood are often better value in recycled asphalt than hot mix. Millings are compacted rather than hot-laid, and a hot mix apron where the lane meets the road holds up better where horse-and-buggy traffic turns in.

See our private road and laneway paving and paving in Wellesley for more on rural lanes.

  • Typical price: $1.50 to $3.00 per sq ft for recycled asphalt

Truck Yard Near Cambridge's Highway 401 Business Parks

Loading areas and truck lanes need a deeper structure than car parking: 150 mm Granular A over 450 mm Granular B, with 60 to 75 mm of HL8 and 40 mm of HL3 on top. Tractor-trailer yards follow the site engineer's design, and our commercial paving crews build to it.

Repairs

Repair, Infrared and Sealcoating Projects

Repair jobs are smaller and quicker, and most are booked by owners who want more years from asphalt that is still structurally sound. This table shows the repair work we do often and where it tends to come from.

Specialty

Specialty Work: Heated Driveways, Courts and Garage Floors

Specialty projects need more planning than a standard driveway, usually because another trade or a tighter tolerance is involved.

Heated Driveway With a Replacement

Heated driveways are almost always built during a full replacement, since the cable or PEX tubing sits in or under the new asphalt. Electric systems use self-regulating or mineral-insulated cable rated for hot asphalt, connected by a Licensed Electrical Contractor with an ESA notification.

Details are on our heated asphalt driveways page.

  • Electric: $18 to $30 per heated sq ft on top of paving
  • Hydronic: $20 to $35 per heated sq ft, plus $6,000 to $12,000 for boiler work

Backyard Basketball Half Court

A half court is laser-graded on 150 to 200 mm of Granular A and paved in two lifts, HL3 then the finer HL3F, so the ball bounces true. Colour coating and lines are done by a court surfacing contractor we coordinate with; see sport court paving.

  • Paving only: $6,000 to $12,000

Shop Floor in a Puslinch Pole Barn

Pole barns and equipment sheds on farms in Puslinch and Woolwich get an asphalt floor that is firm, dust-free and easy to sweep. We lay 50 mm HL8 and 40 mm HL3 over 150 to 200 mm of Granular A for asphalt garage and shop floors.

  • Typical price: $4.50 to $7.50 per sq ft

Accessible Walkway and Ramp

Walkways for churches, schools and public spaces follow the AODA Design of Public Spaces Standards in Ontario Regulation 191/11: at least 1,500 mm of clear width, and ramps no steeper than 1:15. Residential paths get 50 mm of HL3 or HL3F on 100 to 150 mm of Granular A; see asphalt walkways and ramps.

  • Typical price: $8 to $14 per sq ft (hand work)
