Overlays on Heritage Lots
Where the base is sound, asphalt resurfacing and overlays add 40 to 50 mm of HL3 without digging beside old stone foundations or mature tree roots.

Elora and Centre Wellington
Kitchener Asphalt Paving Pros paves and rebuilds driveways in Elora and the surrounding Township of Centre Wellington, in Wellington County. Elora sits near the outer edge of our service area, so we plan each job here as a full paving day rather than a stop between others.
Driveway paving in Elora covers three very different properties. There are 19th-century limestone homes on narrow lots in the old village, new houses in the South River and South Ridge subdivisions, and country properties along the Wellington Roads toward Salem, Fergus and Inverhaugh.
What ties them together is the rock. The Grand River has cut the Elora Gorge about 30 m into Guelph Formation dolostone, and in parts of the village that bedrock sits close enough to the surface to change how deep we can dig.
Services
Elora jobs lean toward careful residential work and long rural driveways. These four services cover most of what we book in Centre Wellington.
Where the base is sound, asphalt resurfacing and overlays add 40 to 50 mm of HL3 without digging beside old stone foundations or mature tree roots.
When the old surface has failed, our driveway removal and replacement takes it to recycling and rebuilds the base, with rock removal priced in where the dolostone is shallow.
Narrow village lots often need a path more than a wider driveway. We lay asphalt walkways and ramps in HL3 Fine by hand where machines cannot reach.
Long driveways outside the village get our private road and laneway paving build, with an HL8 binder lift under the HL3 surface.
Heritage village
Paving beside an old Elora stone house is mostly about what not to disturb. Local limestone became the village's favourite building stone after 1850, and many of those homes sit on narrow lots with shallow footings and mature trees close to the driveway.
Some properties in the village are designated under the Ontario Heritage Act, and alterations to designated properties go through a Township of Centre Wellington heritage permit. We ask you to check your property's status with the Township before we change a driveway's size or layout.

New homes
New homes on Elora's south side are usually ready for a finished driveway one to two years after closing, once the lot has settled. Most of the growth is in the South River subdivision off South River Road and the South Ridge subdivision nearby, both built out in phases.
Builder gravel depth, soft spots over service trenches, and whether the lot grade still drains away from the garage. Thin bases get topped up to 150 to 200 mm of Granular A.
Clean tie-ins at the garage slab and sidewalk, tack coat on every joint, and 60 mm of compacted HL3. A typical double driveway of 800 to 1,000 sq ft takes one day.
Permits
Township streets and roads in Elora need a Township of Centre Wellington entrance permit, while Wellington Roads such as 7, 18 and 21 need a County of Wellington entrance permit. The County rule surprises most owners: it requires a permit even to pave an existing entrance.
| Detail | Township of Centre Wellington | County of Wellington |
|---|---|---|
| Roads covered | Village streets and township roads | Wellington Roads 7, 18, 21 and other County roads |
| When a permit is needed | New or changed driveway entrance | New entrance, changed design, location or use, temporary entrance, and paving an existing entrance |
| What the application asks for | Location plan with buildings, trees and driveways, road features within 180 m, and the 911 sign number | Sketch of the entrance, a PROPOSED ENTRANCE sign on site, and a certificate of insurance naming the County |
| Design limits | Set by the Township on review | Residential and farm entrances typically no wider than 6.0 m, sloping no more than 3% for 5.0 m past the shoulder |
A County permit lapses if the entrance is not built and accepted within one year. We supply our certificate of insurance for the County application and time the paving inside that window.
Rural Centre Wellington
Country driveways around Elora can run a few hundred metres, and the challenge is getting enough hot mix there while it is still hot. Asphalt leaves the plant at about 135 C to 160 C and has to be rolled before it drops below about 85 C.
We plan the truck count and spacing so loads arrive in sequence, and pave long lanes in one continuous pass where we can to avoid cold joints.

Drive time
Elora is 30 to 35 minutes from our Kitchener shop, close to the edge of our standard service area. We book Elora and nearby Fergus and Salem jobs onto planned paving days so the crew, equipment and hot mix trucks make one trip.
Site visits are still booked within 2 to 3 business days. In season, most Elora driveways are paved 2 to 4 weeks after signing, plus time for County or Township permits and Ontario One Call locates.
FAQ
Questions Elora and Centre Wellington owners ask us before booking.
They can for designated properties. Alterations to a property designated under the Ontario Heritage Act need a Township of Centre Wellington heritage permit, so check your status with the Township before changing a driveway's size or layout.
The County of Wellington's Engineering Services department reviews and approves entrances on County roads such as Wellington Road 7. Township roads go to Centre Wellington instead.
Yes. The County's entrance policy lists paving an existing entrance as work that needs a permit, so we apply before paving the section in the road allowance.
Yes. We plan tonnage and trucking so hot mix arrives at paving temperature, and build the lane with an HL8 binder under the HL3 surface.
